My personal travel tips

Before you head out to grab some food or snacks, here are some restaurants and places to grab food near my apartment:

  • Hlemmur mathöll: Hlemmur is Reykjavik’s largest bus station. It used to be a hangout for drunks and delinquent youths, but it was dramatically renovated last summer and is now a hip food court with different restaurants, bars a bakery and a café. You can either go for some gourmet stuff or grab something faster and cheaper, such as a taco or a Vietnamese Bánh mì. My fav is the gratinated goat's cheese at Skál!

  • Vitabar: This is the place to grab a decent but cheap hamburger in moments of hangover or cash shortage. It's as authentic as it gets and it's actually in the same street as my apartment, just walk further up the street until you see it on your right hand corner.

  • Eldsmiðjan: Not the best pizza in town, but hey, the pies are baked in a wood burning oven and the place is very close to my house. Also, they deliver (if you're feeling extremely lazy).

  • Kex Hostel: A superb place for delish food and nice craft beer. My favourite dish (not surprisingly) is the goat's cheese panini. Plus, there's live jazz every Tuesday evening.

  • Lemon: This Icelandic chain offers only grilled sandwiches and freshly squeezed juices. A surprising combo, I know, but it's actually pretty yummy. It's also cheap.

  • Sumac: I tried his new Lebanese restaurant for the first time just recently and it's already one of my favourite bars/bistros in town. Great cocktails, superb food, good atmosphere. If you plan on having dinner there, you should make reservations.

  • Ban Thai: Never been there, but it's close to my house and I know that many of my friends love it.
