If you think Iceland is beautiful by land, just wait until you see it by sea. Sea Kayaking Stykkisholmur will take you to Breiðafjörður, a spot on the Western coast of Iceland known for its spectacular wildlife sightings and views. You may even paddle upon a decades-old shipwreck. The kayak tour will start and finish in the quaint, picture-perfect village of Stykkishólmur (seriously, Google it!).

What to expect?

Breiðafjörður is well know for its endless amounts of untouched islands and its incredible wildlife. On this tour you paddle around flocks of seabirds f.ex. puffins and eider ducks. Underneath and around us, you can spot occasional seals popping up to check out these new explorers paddling around their hometurf.

If luck is on our side you might even witness the king of iceland’s birdlife, the white-tailed eagle, flying far above or nesting on any of the island we pass. The white tail eagle is the rarest nesting bird in Iceland and when spotted it is an unforgettable view. Most eagles nest in Western Iceland and the Westfjords so your stakes are up for an unforgettable birding.

On our voyage lies the old shipwreck of Thorgeir, wich has been untouched for decades.

Along the calm paddling you will learn about the history and geology of the volcanic and glacier covered Snæfellsnes peninsula. Your professional kayak guide will also lead you into the local atmosphere and tell you the untold story of the mystical shipwreck Thorgeir. Which for many is the highlight of the tour.

Your tour will start at our kayak base located in the center of the charming village of Stykkishólmur. Stykkishólmur is renowned for its old colorful houses and rich history as well as being the gateway to the innumerable islands of Breidafjordur bay.

After short safety briefing you will be equipped with all necessary equipment for the adventure that awaits.

We set out for sea from the old harbour, where more experienced fishermen set sails to provide food for the town and families.

After a short paddle we will cross our first landmark, Landey, one of the most fruitful islands when it comes to harvesting the world famous eiderdown. It is a nesting paradise for the birds of Breidafjordur and during the summer the island is full of fluffy little nestlings.

Our next landmark is the shipwreck of fishing boat Thorgeir, first generation of steel trawler that fished the icelandic seas. After hauling icelandic storm in the 80’s old Thorgeir broke free of his anker line and crashed at the shore of Landey and has been there ever since. After short paddle break at this picturesque spot, our tour threads on between all the islands absorbing the everlasting peace and quiet out on the sea before we paddle our way back to shore.

All in all this tour is the ultimate way to explore Breiðafjörður bay, in a small group, at your own pace, beginners and experienced kayakers alike.
