Have you ever thought about stepping into a volcano? It's hard to describe how surreal the experience is to be hauled deep down 120m (400ft) down inside a volcano through a tiny opening on top of the crater. Inside the Volcano provides an amazing experience you will never forget.
This tour gives you the rare opportunity you go inside a dormant volcano. The conditions at Þríhnjúkagígur Volcano are pretty unique and allow visitors to descend 120 m (400 ft) down to the bottom of its crater. It’s the only place in the world where it’s possible to enter a magma chamber by an elevator.
Since the elevator was built, this tour has become a hit, both amongst locals and visitors. In 2015, a popular Icelandic band called Kaleo actually shot a music video to their hit song Way Down We Go.
The tour starts with a brisk hike up to the crater, which lasts around 40–50 minutes. Than you descend down the crater and spend about 35–40 minutes inside the volcano. The elevator is really an open cable car, so your view during the descend is unspoilt.
The total duration of the tour is 5–6 hours.
