Have you ever thought about stepping into a volcano? It's hard to describe how surreal the experience is to be hauled deep down 120m (400ft) down inside a volcano through a tiny opening on top of the crater. Inside the Volcano provides an amazing experience you will never forget.

What to expect?

This tour gives you the rare opportunity you go inside a dormant volcano. The conditions at Þríhnjúkagígur Volcano are pretty unique and allow visitors to descend 120 m (400 ft) down to the bottom of its crater. It’s the only place in the world where it’s possible to enter a magma chamber by an elevator.

Since the elevator was built, this tour has become a hit, both amongst locals and visitors. In 2015, a popular Icelandic band called Kaleo actually shot a music video to their hit song Way Down We Go.

The tour starts with a brisk hike up to the crater, which lasts around 40–50 minutes. Than you descend down the crater and spend about 35–40 minutes inside the volcano. The elevator is really an open cable car, so your view during the descend is unspoilt.

The total duration of the tour is 5–6 hours.

Overview

  • Operation dates : From the 15th of May to the 15th of October.
  • Tour departures : Several departures every day. The first tour at 8:00 and the last tour in the afternoon.
  • Duration : 5–6 hours. You will be spending about 35–40 minutes inside the volcano.
  • Fitness level needed : Moderate – no specific hiking or climbing experience is needed. There won't be any uphill walk, but the surface during the hike to the crater is partly uneven. If you are physically disabled or in a particularly bad shape, this tour won't be suitable for you.
  • Distance walked : Approximately 3 km (2 miles) each way. The walk usually takes around 45–50 minutes, depending on how fast you walk. A guide will be with you at all times during the walk.
  • Minimum age limit : 12 years. On special occasions, we can and have made exceptions on the age.

What is included?

  • Free pick-up at your hotel in Reykjavík.
  • All the gear you need to stay safe (helmets, harnesses, etc).
  • Small groups, plenty of guides.
  • Traditional Icelandic meat soup, coffee/tea and maybe something for the sweet-toothed as well. Vegetarians will have alternatives.
  • Transport back to your hotel in Reykjavík.

What do I need to bring?

  • Decent hiking shoes are ideal footwear for this tour. We don’t recommend trainers or sneekers since they might become dirty/punctured.
  • Outdoor clothes. The weather up in the mountains may be totally different to the weather in the capital. The temperature is always the same inside the crater – about 5–6°C (42–43°F) – which makes it essential to bring some nice and warm clothes.
  • A camera - to capture the moment
  • Water to drink
